Drivers are urged to avoid the area of Washington and Emmertsen because power lines are down after an accident Saturday night.
Mount Pleasant police say a 50-year-old Mount Pleasant man was arrested for drunk driving after he plowed into a utility pole that had transformers on top of it and sheered the pole in half. When the pole fell, it pulled down power lines with it, making the area unsafe for traffic.
Officers were originally called at 11:21 p.m. Saturday to answer an alarm in the 5600 block of Washington Avenue. At the location of the alarm they thought they heard gunshots nearby and went to investigate and that’s when they discovered the accident scene.
WE Energies remained on the scene of the accident as of 8 a.m. repairing and replacing the damaged pole and transformers.
