Southern Lakes Conference champion Union Grove, as well as conference rivals New Berlin Eisenhower and Pewaukee, were among the area teams to advance this week in the first weekend of the WIAA playoffs. Sectional semifinals will take place this week on Thursday at neutral sites.
Caloutte helps Broncos advance with two double-digit performances
Union Grove advanced to the sectionals of the WIAA Division 2 playoffs with two wins over Southern Lakes Conference foes. The Broncos advance to play Waukesha West at Racine Park on Thursday night.
Against Elkhorn, Payton Caloutte led the way with 18 points in a 72-37 semi-final win. Sophie Rampulla led the Broncos in scoring in the regional final game against Wilmot with 17 points, while Caloutte had 16 in Union Grove’s 81-36 win to advance to the sectional round.
Rivals reunite in sectional action
WIAA Conference rivals in the Woodland West conference will rematch at Greenfield High School in the sectional round this season as New Berlin Eisenhower and Pewaukee will also face off this week. New Berlin Eisenhower defeated West Allis Central (83-48) and South Milwaukee (50-17) in blowout wins to advance, while Pewaukee got blowout wins over Waukesha North (94-47) and New Berlin West (64-35) to advance to sectionals.
Pius XI Catholic will face off against Whitefish Bay on Thursday in WIAA sectional action. Pius XI Catholic advanced with wins over Wauwatosa East (62-35) and Wisconsin Lutheran (74-57), while Whitefish Bay defeated Milwaukee Washington/Fuller 64-25 before beating Wauwatosa West 64-47 in the regional final.
Cedarburg also advanced in Division 2 action as they beat seventh-seeded Plymouth in the regional semifinals (78-43) before beating Slinger (63-55) at home on Feb. 26. Cedarburg will take on Beaver Dam at Oshkosh North on Thursday.
