A woman police say beat her sister with sticks during an argument appeared in court today on charges that she abused her daughter.

Erica Samone Petty, 22, of Racine, is charged with physical abuse of a child and obstructing an officer, for a Saturday incident.

Police were called to the 1300 block of Prospect Street Saturday for an assault in progress. When they arrived the 15-year-old girl was crying hysterically and had multiple lashes on her left arm, from shoulder to forearm.

According to the criminal complaint, the girl told police that she had gotten into an argument with her mother, and Petty came in, wielding two sticks, saying the girl had been disrespecting her mother.

Petty told police the girl had been causing a disturbance, and that she grabbed her arms to restrain and calm her down.

Other witnesses told police they saw Petty swing a thin metal rod, striking the girl multiple times.

Petty was found in a locked basement, and was later taken into custody. She was released on a signature bond.
