Runners cheered and celebrated Saturday Vicki Schulz who was the last person to cross the finish line at the annual Iron Horse 5K race in Sturtevant.

Schulz, of Racine, completed the 3.1-mile course in just over an hour, and she did it all in her wheelchair.

Sturtevant Village President Steve Jansen patrolled the race route on a bicycle to help runners if they were hurt, and he said as soon as he found out Schulz was part of the 5K, he rode next to her until a few yards before the finish line.

“She didn’t want any help,” he said. “I tell you, that lady is inspiring.”

Schulz crossed the finish line by herself with the cheers and applause of other runners continuing even after she stopped and had her photo taken with Jansen.

“I feel good,” she said. “I’m glad it’s over.”
