Work continues on Mitchell School after a fire destroyed the gym and water from extinguishing the blaze damaged parts of the elementary school.

The fire occurred in the early morning hours of Feb. 27 and was determined by the Racine Fire Department to be an accident. A cause is still under investigation.

Middle school students returned to school at Mitchell on March 18, and they will have extended days through the end of the year to make up for the missed time.elementary students were moved for the rest of the year to Wind Point Elementary.

Racine Unified officials expect the gym to be rebuilt, but final costs are not known yet, The Journal Times reported. The district does have insurance to cover the damage after a $50,000 deductible.
