RACINE — In recognition of its efforts in community revitalization, the Downtown Racine Corporation (DRC) has been awarded the 2024 Accredited Main Street America designation. This prestigious accolade, announced on June 3, underscores the DRC’s commitment to preserving Downtown Racine’s historical essence while fostering economic growth and community engagement.

Rigorous Standards and Evaluation

The accreditation, a benchmark for excellence in downtown and neighborhood commercial district revitalization, was awarded after a thorough evaluation. The Downtown Racine Corporation was assessed by its personnel and board of directors alongside Wisconsin Main Street, a partner of Main Street America. The evaluation focused on several key areas: community commitment, inclusive leadership, diversified funding, strategic programming, preservation-based economic development, and tangible impact.

Kelly Kruse, the Downtown Racine Corporation’s executive director, emphasized the accreditation’s significance and the organization’s impact on the community.

“This accreditation validates our hard work and vision for Downtown Racine,” said Kruse. “By creating engaging events and enhancing our downtown area, we are building a stronger, more connected community where businesses can thrive, and residents can take pride in their city.”

Downtown Racine Milestones

Over the past year, the DRC has achieved remarkable milestones contributing to this recognition.

Notably, the organization was awarded the Best Retail Event in the state for its First Fridays initiative and Best Marketing for the “I Love Racine” campaign by the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation (WEDC). These efforts led to a 20% increase in event traffic in 2023 compared to 2022, showcasing the organization’s effectiveness in drawing people to Downtown Racine. Additionally, the DRC organized over 80 programmed event dates in the past year, reflecting a strong dedication to community involvement and economic stimulation.

The Main Street America accreditation is not just an award; it represents the DRC’s successful application of the Main Street Approach, a comprehensive methodology for downtown revitalization.

This approach has proven to be a powerful tool in enhancing local economies. Nationally, Main Street America programs generated $5.68 billion in local reinvestment in 2023, creating thousands of new businesses and jobs, and rehabilitating historic buildings.

Looking Ahead

The Downtown Racine Corporation’s recent successes and accreditation highlight a promising future for Downtown Racine. The recognition sets a high standard for community-driven development, ensuring that Racine continues to grow as a vibrant and economically robust city. As the DRC moves forward, its efforts will likely inspire similar initiatives in other communities, showcasing the transformative power of strategic, preservation-based economic development.
