Sturtevant

The Village of Sturtevant has been named one of the 50 safest communities in Wisconsin by home security provider SafeWise.com.

Sturtevant Police Chief Sean Marschke made the announcement Tuesday at the Sturtevant Village Board Meeting.

“I am pleased to see the Village of Sturtevant’s uniform crime statistics, quoted by SafeWise, placing us as one of the safest communities in our state,” he said, “The statistics don’t convey the increased calls for service we have experienced.”

Marschke said the number of traffic crashes, OWI arrests, domestic abuse call and a variety of misdemeanors are all increasing.

SafeWise looked at communities across the state with populations greater than 5,000 and then narrowed the field down from there. The village is listed at No. 14 and was chosen based primarily on FBI statistics focusing on low violent crime numbers and property crime rates.

SafeWise quotes statistics that puts Sturtevant’s violent crime rate at .29 per 1,000 residents, and property crimes at 10.02 per 1,000 residents.

By comparison, the No. 1 rated city was the Village of Freedom in Outagamie County with a violent crime rate of .17 per 1,000 residents and a property crime rate of 2.04 per 1,000 residents.

“(Sturtevant’s) slogan, ‘On the Move,’ speaks to the core of its strong economy,” the entry about Sturtevant reads. “(Crime is low) thanks to a police department who holds community involvement in high esteem and strives to encourage relationships … through communication to achieve prevention, intervention, and enforcement …”

Marschke agreed.

“These are quality of life issues, that the residents of Sturtevant are concerned about and an important mission of our department’s work,” he stated.
