Racine police say a 28-year-old man is facing attempted burglary charges after he tried to break into a cancer patient’s home to possibly steal her prescriptions.

Jakob Childs, of Racine, was charged Monday in Racine County Circuit Court with one felony count of attempted burglary; two felony counts of bail jumping; and one felony count of second offense marijuana possession. If convicted, he faces up to 28 years in prison and/or up to $42,500.

According to the criminal complaint, a woman on Aug. 26 called police because Childs tried to break into her house. She had been lying down and heard pounding at the back door. When she went to investigate, Childs was standing directly outside the door and took off on a bike once he saw her.

Police say the woman told them she has cancer and has a number of prescriptions, some of which have been stolen previously when she wasn’t home. Officers found Childs at his home and took him into custody without incident. During a search of his person, police found a container hooked to a carabiner on Childs’ belt that contained almost 12 grams of marijuana.

Childs remains in the Racine County Jail on a $1,000 cash bond. He will next be in court Sept. 14 for his preliminary hearing.
