The Green Bay Packers hope to continue their late-season surge this Sunday at Solider Field against the Chicago Bears. The Packers need to win out to make the playoffs, so this upcoming tilt against the Bears is a must-win. But that is not the only reason this game is a must-win.
The Packers and Bears have been dueling since 1921 and on Sunday they will play for the 194th time. Remarkably, the all-time series is nearly tied. Nearly. The Bears currently lead the series 94-93-6. In fact, the Bears have led the series since 1933. With a win on Sunday the Packers can finally even the all-time ledger.
There is something deeply annoying about the Bears leading the all-time Series. The Packers have won more championships (13 to 9), more Super Bowls (4 to 1), more division titles (28 to 24), and lead the all time score, 3305-3304 (hey, a lead is a lead). Simply put, it seems a bit off that the Bears lead the head-to-head series. I think we will all sleep a little better on Sunday night if we no longer have to live in a world where the Bears hold the historical edge.
The stakes of Sunday’s game are not as high as, say, the 2010 NFC Championship Game. But if you care about this rivalry – and I think most of us do – you want the all-time series to be tied. This will both knock the Bears off their perch set the state for an even bigger game in 2017: the battle for the all-time series lead.
