RACINE, KENOSHA —Gateway Technical College will soon be offering part-time law enforcement training for those who don’t have the funds or time to attend an academy full-time.

The tuition of 15 students will be paid for, thanks to a grant Gateway received from the Wisconsin Technical College System, according to a Feb. 23 press release.

Those interested in applying must do so by March 1. An application workshop and physical fitness test will be held on Feb. 29. This event requires pre-registration, which can be done here.

To be accepted, applicants must have completed an associate’s degree or earned 40 post-secondary credits, according to the press release.

“However,” the press release continues, “the academy allows for dual enrollment or for students to finish the 40 credits while in the academy.”

The importance of a part-time law enforcement academy

Offering a part-time academy benefits those who would like to become an officer but have other duties, such as families and jobs, that keep them from enrolling full-time, Amy Koeppel expressed in the press release.

“This part-time option will allow them (students) to keep their current career and provides the flexibility for them to train at the academy at night and on the weekend,” Koeppel said.

Instructor Justin Miller spoke in the press release about how students in the part-time academy will be learning the same set of skills as those in a full-time. The same training will be offered, and candidates must meet the same requirements as full-time academy candidates.

Miller also expressed how the grant received from the Wisconsin Technical College System benefits future law enforcement students.

“This grant provides even more opportunities for those who want to pursue a law enforcement career,” Miller said. “As far as I know, this is the first time this has been offered. It gives them a fast track to a career.”
