Robert SwantonRacine police say a man connected to the murder of Melissa Hansen was behind bars Friday.

Robert Swanton, 31, was arrested Friday, Racine Police Chief Art Howell confirmed for Racine County Eye via email.

“Members of the Special Investigations Unit, supported by patrol officers and Major Crimes investigators, took Robert S. Swanton into custody in connection with the homicide of Melissa Hansen. Swanton was identified as a person of interest early-on in this investigation. Based on preliminary information received from the Wisconsin Crime Lab, Swanton was taken into custody (Friday),” he wrote. “Additional information to be released pending further analysis of investigative evidence forwarded to the State Crime Lab.”

Swanton was booked into the Racine County Jail on a 1st degree homicide charge and a cash bond of $1,000,000.

Hansen was found dead in her apartment March 8, reportedly from stab wounds as recorded at Racine County Scanner from scanner chatter.

Hansen left behind three children.

In her obituary at Marsh, Meredith and Acklam Funeral Home, she is remembered as intelligent and talented with a big heart.

A memorial fund has been established for Melissa Hansen’s three children, who are 19, 17, and 11-years old.

Online records indicate the criminal complaint against Swanton and a warrant were filed Friday.
