An Illinois man was brought up on charges after he admitted to robbing a Wells Fargo Bank in 2015.
Robert Jones, 36, was charged Wednesday with the robbery of a financial institution by the Racine County District Attorney’s Office in 2015. A warrant had been issued in September for Jones’ arrest. He was in court Wednesday for an initial appearance.
According to the criminal complaint, Jones entered Wells Fargo Bank, 1799 ML King Dr., on June 6, 2015. Approaching a teller, he told her that he “needed to cash a check” and handed the woman an envelope. When she opened the envelope, he told the teller he was robbing her and he had a gun. He then demanded that she give him “big bills.”
The teller told Jones she didn’t have any big bills and noticed that he was reaching for his waistband. Placing the money on the counter, Jones took the money and the envelope and walked out of the bank. Jones took just over $500.
Investigators developed a possible suspect, but it wasn’t the person who robbed the bank.
On August 14, 2017, investigators with the Racine Police Department met with Jones at Sheridan Correctional Institution and showed a still photo of the person who robbed the bank. Jones admitted to being the robber, but he didn’t have a gun.
He had a heavy drug problem back then and got about $300 to $400. And “it was gone in about an hour partying,” he told them.
Jones is being held on a $2,500 cash bond. A preliminary hearing has been set for the 8:30 a.m. Feb. 21.
