RACINE — A traffic stop on Feb. 26 in Racine led to the arrest of a 48-year-old Racine man on drug charges – but those were elevated later when police learned there was more to the story.

And that was confirmed after a search by a body scanner revealed additional drugs hidden inside the defendant’s rectum.

Donte Adams faces felony charges of possession with intent to deliver fentanyl, possession of a controlled substance and possession of THC, which carry a maximum total prison term of 32 years and a $120,000 fine.

Adams, who is charged as a repeat offender, remains in custody in the Racine County Jail on a $15,000 cash bond.

Criminal court records indicate that an arrest warrant for $50,000 had been issued on April 24, and the defendant was returned to custody on that warrant on May 3.

The criminal complaint: Drugs found during traffic stop; more discovered inside body cavity

Officers with the Mount Pleasant Police Department were working as part of the Milwaukee Area Safe Streets Task Force and the Racine Police Department’s Violent Crimes and Intelligence Unit when they stopped the defendant’s vehicle on Feb. 26, at 4:07 p.m. for having illegally tinted windows.

Through a records check, police learned that Adams had an expired driver’s license and was on federal probation.

Police searched Adams’s vehicle, and found two small baggies with suspected marijuana, along with a single pill and a cell phone. Adams was arrested and transported to the Racine County Jail.

A body scanner showed what police believed to be a foreign object inside the defendant’s rectum, so he was transported to Ascension Hospital, the complaint states.

While he waited for medical clearance, Adams requested a cup of water. While an officer spoke with security, he observed the defendant “moving around on his bed.” The defendant then observed Adams ask a cleaning lady to take the cup of water.

Police took possession of the cup and observed “a large plastic bag with multiple pre-packaged baggies inside with a white type of substance.” At the jail, Adams again was put through a body scanner, which now no longer detected a foreign object.

The large bag seized at the hospital had nine clear plastic baggies inside of various sizes, and each contained a white substance. An additional seven baggies were found, and all totaled, they weighed 20.8 grams and tested positive for the presence of the drug fentanyl.

Adams also had 4 grams of marijuana and a pill that tested positive for MDMA and weighed 0.6 grams, the complaint states.

Adams is due back in Racine County Circuit Court on June 19, for a 9 a.m. preliminary hearing fo the current drug chrages.
