Racine police say a teenage girl attacked another inmate at the Racine County Jail after being arrested for her participation in an attack on another girl outside Park High School.
Khadijah James, 17, was charged Friday in Racine County Circuit Court with a felony count of battery by prisoners and a misdemeanor count of disorderly conduct. She was also charged with misdemeanor battery as a party to a crime and disorderly conduct and two felony counts of bail jumping. If convicted, she faces up to 19 years and 90 days in jail and/or up to $42,000 in fines.
According to the criminal complaints, a Park High School student was walking home after school on Nov. 7, 2013 when a large group approached. She was attacked first by one girl and then by James and a third girl who were both transported to the scene by that girl’s mother. The victim said she was punched in the head while she was walking and again after she fell down.
Officers say they identified James and another assailant in a video provided by police stationed at Park. A witness confirmed the girl’s account of the attack and said she was afraid to intervene.
On Dec. 27, 2013, James was seen on jailhouse video entering the cell of another inmate, spraying that person with a cleaning solution and punching her, the complaint reads.
Racine County Sheriff’s deputies say the inmate James is accused of assaulting said she and James had words earlier that day. When the woman told James she wasn’t afraid of her, James sprayed the woman in the face with a cleaning solution and then punched her several times in the face and threw her to the floor.
James said the other inmate started it all by calling a James a (expletive), the complaint reads. James admitted to spraying the woman in the face but said there were punches exchanged, and the other inmate may have bitten her on the thumb.
Deputies say video shows James walking around the dayroom and repeatedly peering into the other inmate’s cell. James reportedly took a bottle of cleaning solution and walked over to the cell one more time before rushing inside. Deputies noted they could see the front of the cell where James was throwing several punches and that the fight moved to the back of the cell.
At the time of both incidents, James was out of jail on a $5,000 signature bond, the complaint reads, for charges stemming from an incident in October.
James remains in the Racine County Jail on separate $500 cash bonds for each case. She will next be in court on Jan. 8 for both of these cases.
