A Racine man was charged after he walked into a man’s house and tried to punch a Caledonia man, but then got into hot water himself for falsely claiming that the man was hold the people inside the house hostage at 12:15 a.m. July 5, according to the Racine County District Attorney’s Office.
Travis Guthrie, 30, of Racine, was charged by the Racine County District Attorney’s Office with disorderly conduct, knowingly violating a domestic abuse injunction, and obstructing an officer.
If convicted, Guthrie faces up to 21 months in prison and fines up to $21,000.
According to the criminal complaint, police responded to a resident in the 3400 block of Ivy Lane after a report of a man that had a gun and wouldn’t let people out of the home. During the investigation, police learned that the man Guthrie accused of holding them hostage was not doing so. Gutherie, who had been drinking and appeared to be under the influence of narcotics,  confronted the man for allegedly abusing his wife and children.
Guthrie told police the man struck him, but they didn’t see any marks or injuries on him.
Guthrie’s girlfriend, who was with him at the time, told police that Guthrie walked into the man’s house and “began swinging punches wildly at him.” None of Guthrie’s punches landed when he tried to strike the man, but the man punched him in the chin. After getting hit, Guthrie left the house and called 911.
The man told police he didn’t want to pursue battery charges against Guthrie, but because his girlfriend had a valid restraining order against him he was cited for violating it. Also, because he caused a disturbance and told the dispatcher that the man was holding people inside the house hostage, he was also arrested for disorderly conduct.
