Sturtevant police say a 34-year-old Mount Pleasant man is facing his 6th OWI after officers pulled him over Sunday for speeding on Durand Avenue.
Jacob Allen Hughes was charged Monday in Racine County Circuit Court with a single felony count of operating while intoxicated, general alcohol enhancer, 5th or 6th offense. If convicted, he faces up to six years in jail and/or $10,000 in fines.
According to the criminal complaint, Sturtevant officers around 6:30 p.m. Sunday observed a vehicle driving eastbound on Durand Avenue that appeared to be speeding. Police followed and clocked the car doing 60 miles per hour in a 40 mph zone – the driver also ran a red light – so they initiated a traffic stop.
Officers say when the approached the driver – later identified as Hughes – he admitted to having four beers and two shots. He also told police that on a scale from one to 10 of intoxication, he was sitting in the middle and that he had been arrested five times before for OWI.
Hughes at first refused to submit to sobriety tests and that he wanted to call a lawyer, the complaint reads. But, after being granted a phone call to his mom to tell her he “was going away,” he agreed to a legal blood draw.
Hughes remained in the Racine County Jail Monday night after being assigned a $20,000 cash bond at his initial appearance Monday. He will next be in court for his preliminary hearing Sept. 24.
