The Belle City is the 4th best city in the country for women-owned businesses.

NerdWallet, a financial site, ranked 289 cities with at least 10,000 businesses of different sizes, and they looked at successful women-owned businesses, overall business climate and the area’s economy.

They chose Racine, in part, because female business owners generate big revenue.

“Businesses in Racine benefit from a low cost of living and a location close to major markets… the average business owned by a woman in Racine produces $586,241 in revenue a year, significantly more than most places on our list,” NerdWallet posted.

The site also listed the Wisconsin Women’s Business Initiative Corporation and Racine County Economic Development Corp. as resources for women who own or want to own their own business.

While the big state of California is a great place for women to own businesses, smaller markets have higher revenues than women in larger communities.

There are an estimated 9.1 million women-owned businesses in the U.S. that generate over $1 trillion in revenues, according to the 2014 State of Women-Owned Businesses Report from American Express OPEN.

An interactive chart on NerdWallet shows that more than 25 percent of Racine-owned business are owned by women.
