Slide the City, a water slide event slated to come to Racine in August, has received an experimental permit by the Wisconsin Department of Health Services.
The event, which allows guests to slip-and-slide 1,000 feet along Hoffert Drive from English Street to about 100 yards north of the Beachside Oasis, had been put on hold because the state had never had events like this before.
The state took issue with the filtered water in the pool at the bottom of the slide, but those issues are being worked out as the event will need to meet state and local health department guidelines. Event organizers plan to use a continuous flow water system, which is different than the re-circulated water plan initially proposed.
“Representatives from the state departments are meeting this week to determine those guidelines and upon completion of their meetings, that information will be forwarded to the local health department,” said Kari Dawson, events director for Real Racine.
Slide the City organizer Scott Ward said he also plans to hold similar events in Milwaukee, Green Bay, Sun Prairie and Eau Claire.
With some of the logistics still needing to be worked out, the event would still need a final approval from several committees and the Racine common council.
The event will be capped at having 5,000 participants, but if it sells out the city might consider adding a second day. After the event receives final approval from the common council, the registration process will begin sometime in mid-May, Dawson said.
