Shushika Smith

A Racine woman with amany theft convictions is accused of trying to take merchandise worth more than $300 from Target, 5300 Durand Ave., on Tuesday.

Shushika R. Smith, 40, has convictions for identity theft, forgery, retail theft and theft in a business setting dating back to the mid-1990s, according to the criminal complaint filed against her on Wednesday. If convicted, she faces up to nine months in prison and/or up to $10,000 in fines. Because she is considered a repeat offender, a judge has the discretion to add time to any sentence Smith might receive.

She is accused of using scissors to cut off spider wrap and security alarms from the packaging of Dre Beats headphones, valued at $199.99, and hiding the headphones, a DVD, three pairs of shorts and three shirts inside her clothing before trying to leave the store. In total, the merchandise store personnel report they found on her was worth $300.92.

Smith remains in the Racine County Jail on a $400 cash bond and a state Department of Corrections hold. She will next be in court June 25 for a pre-trial conference.
