A man was charged with battery after he kicked a Racine Police officer that was trying to arrest him on Saturday.
Michael Hicks, 51, of Racine, was charged by the Racine County District Attorney’s Office on Tuesday with battery to a law enforcement officer, disorderly conduct, and resisting a police officer. If convicted of all charges, Hicks faces up seven years in prison and/or fined up to $21,000.
According to the criminal complaint, Racine Police were called at 4:05 a.m. Saturday to a home at 1200 Washington Ave. Officers went to the house, which is known to be a drug trafficking place and place where prostitution has happened, for a report of a man bleeding from the face. When the officers arrived on scene, the man was found unresponsive and was suffering from a serious injury. An officer tried to help the man, but Hicks started yelling at the police officer.
Because Hicks kept trying to talk to the man and wouldn’t follow their orders, another officer tried to arrest him. The officer trying to help the injured man had to stop what he was doing and help the other officer because Hicks was fighting with the other officer. The officer used his electronic control device on him, but Hicks kicked him three or four times. The two officers then put their bodies directly on top of Hicks to get him to stop fighting.
“Hicks continued to scream and fight and I was forced to deliver approximately four to six strong side hand strikes to Hicks’ face and chin,” according to the complaint. “After being struck multiple times officers were finally able to place Hicks in handcuffs and (take him) into custody.”
Hicks was taken to Wheaton Franciscan-All Saints because he told them “everything hurts.” While there, Hicks told hospital staff that he smoked crack cocaine just before police arrived on scene. After being treated for his injuries, Hicks was taken to the Racine County Jail.
He is being held on a $3,500 cash bond. A preliminary hearing has been set for 8:30 a.m. Feb. 17.
