Elmwood Park trustees Thursday approved 4-3 the sale of the Taylor Home property to the Evergreen Academy for $900,000.

In documents obtained by Racine County Eye, Evergreen has until Monday to accept the final offer that includes a financing stipulation that gives Evergreen 20 years to pay off the mortgage.

Evergreen School leases Beebee School at the corner of Lathrop and Taylor Avenues as well as one of the buildings on the Taylor Home property. Beebee School is Elmwood Park’s former village hall.

EverGreen Principal Michael Meier told The Journal Times earlier this month that a deal was needed quickly so school leaders can effectively plan for the coming school year.

There are 16.84 acres and six buildings included in the sale. The village uses one of the buildings for its administrative offices and uses the gymnasium building for its board meetings and other public events. The contract spells out how the parties must come to an agreement that allows Elmwood Park continued use of those spaces.

Addendum “B” also outlines the need for an agreement between the village and the school to not put up any buildings within 100 feet of the southern border of the property.

Though the meeting was listed as a closed session on the agenda, trustees unanimously agreed to keep the meeting open so residents could be part of the procedure. During the meeting, citizens spoke both for and against the sale.

In the end, though, Trustees Pete Clothier, Alan Bagg, Nick Haas and Jeff Klimek said “aye,” and Trustees Laura Rude, Kathy Wells and President Ellis Steiner voted, “nay.”

Closing on the property is expected sometime next month.
