A colorful weekend is ahead for Racine County. Visit a popular art festival, see the stars, catch a free concert or try a kolache. Real Racine has lots of great suggestions.
Two days of art. The Monument Square Art Festival (MSAF) brings the works of 70 artists to Downtown Racine on Saturday and Sunday. You’ll see painting, photography, sculpture, ceramics and mixed media. The weekend includes live music and an opportunity to vote on a People’s Choice Award. New this year is the Great Lakes Chalk Art Competition, sponsored by Real Racine, which features more than a dozen chalk artists who will create original works on large Masonite panels. You can vote for your favorite chalk art to be recognized Sunday afternoon. The completed chalk art pieces will be displayed at the Racine Arts Council ArtSpace Gallery, 416 Sixth St., from June 17 through July 23. Each piece will be offered for sale via a public raffle. MSAF hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday; 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free. Visit www.monumentsquareartfest.com
Thursday music. B-Town Sounds kicks off its 2016 season Thursday with the bluegrass band American Folk. The music starts at 6:30 p.m. at Echo Park, 595 Milwaukee Ave., Burlington. Bring your lawn chair or blanket for this free concert series held every other Thursday through Sept. 1. The music lineup is at www.b-townsounds.com
Summer star gazing. See the stars from 8:30 to 11 p.m. Friday at the Modine-Benstead Observatory, 112 63rd Drive, Yorkville. Racine Astronomical Society members will have the big telescopes set up for looking at stars, planets and the moon. Free admission; donations are welcome. Czech it out. Kolaches (a delicious pastry) and other great home-made food are featured at Bohemian Festival held Friday through Sunday at St. John Nepomuk Church, 1923 Green St., Racine. They will be serving a roast pork dinner on Saturday, a bake sale and white elephant sale all weekend, live music and raffles. Festival hours are 5 to 11 p.m. Friday, 12 to 11 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. Free admission.
Family fun. Everyone is invited to the Lions Picnic in the Park from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at the Waterford Town Park, Hwy. 164 and Jensen Road. The Waterford Lions Club host a free cookout, bingo, petting zoo, bounce houses, obstacle course, fire safety house and police/fire equipment display.
