InSinkErator plans to construct a $24 million 85,000 square-foot building for its headquarters and lab in Mount Pleasant.
A division of Emerson Electric, InSinkErator makes food waste disposers for home and commercial use. The company employs 1,000 people in southeast Wisconsin and plans to move 170 people from its existing headquarters in Racine to the new site, which will be on Highway 20 and Industrial Drive in Mount Pleasant, according to a press release.
The expansion is necessary due to demand. Once the new building is constructed, the company plans to reconfigure their building at 4700 21st Street in Racine and add production capacity at that facility.
Laura Million, business development manager for the Racine County Economic Development Corporation, said the company hopes to break ground this spring.
“They looked at a variety of locations, including Kenosha and Oak Creek,” Million said. “A big part of their decision was a location near their existing operations and something that was going to be a good presence, so that they can attract their workforce. But I also think the incentives played a large role in it as well.”
The company plans to ask Racine County for a $4.65 million loan at the Racine County Board meeting Jan. 18 and Jan. 24.
“We are pleased to invest in the community and support InSinkErator’s proposal to locate its headquarters in Racine County,” said Jonathan Delagrave, Racine County Executive. “Retaining and growing our existing Racine County companies, like InSinkErator, is imperative to fostering a healthy and growing local economy for today as well as for future generations.”
The Village of Mount Pleasant will also consider giving a $600,000 grant to InSinkErator through a tax incremental financing package at the Mount Pleasant Joint Village Board and Community Development Authority meeting on Jan. 24.
“The Village is pleased that InSinkErator has submitted plans to expand and locate 170 of its existing positions in the the Village of Mount Pleasant, continuing to grow its operations locally,” said Jerry Garski, Mount Pleasant Village Board president. “With the Village’s support, InSinkErator has the opportunity to join other development and established businesses, such as Seda Norther America and Brooks Tractor, who are located in the Highway 20/Interstate 94 area.”
The company anticipates completion of the building in the fourth quarter of 2018, but it still needs to get the proper approvals from the county and Mount Pleasant Village Board.
