Two Mount Pleasant trustees will not run for re-election in April.

Neither Ken Otwaska nor Jon Hansen has filed candidacy paperwork and they are not collecting signatures for nomination, a story in The Journal Times reads.

Otwaska told the newspaper that his health is the primary reason he isn’t running to retain his seat.

“I missed a couple of meetings because I couldn’t get there anymore,” Otwaska said. “(My back is) something I got to fix before I would (run) again … I’ve been on a walker since August.”

Both Otwaska and Hansen were elected for the first time to the Mount Pleasant Village Board in 2016.

Trustee Gary Feest’s seat is also up for re-election, and he said part of the reason he is running is because the village hired a new, full-time administrator.

“With the hiring of an administrator, and with enough voters’ permission, I hope to continue to advocate for better policy and procedure,” Feest told Racine County Eye.

Residents interested in serving on the village board have until 5 p.m. Tuesday to return their nomination papers to get their name on the ballot.

The general election is April 3.
