You’re invited to celebrate the river, go for a fund-raising walk, listen to local talent and fly or drive to a Sunday breakfast/lunch. It’s all happening in Racine County this weekend. Come along with Real Racine.
Rollin’ with the river. Join the late summer celebration. The 2018 Root River Festival is a free, family event based on the old-fashioned Chautauqua experience. The festival runs from 12 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Lincoln Park, 2200 Domanik Drive, and includes live music, storytelling, children’s activities, environmental education, a 5k run, food trucks, a biergarten and opportunities for canoeing and kayaking on the historic Root River. A special feature is actor Roger Kuhns who will portray Jens Jensen, a pioneering landscape architect who was a leader in the environmental movement and designed Racine’s public park system in the early 1900s. Local talent. The Racine Symphony Orchestra (RSO) Lakeside Pops hosts the first “Racine Live!” concert at Festival Hall, 5 Fifth St., on Friday. Several guest artists will perform selections ranging from the classics to Broadway. The guest artists include Angel Lawrie, John Nepper, Meri Katherine Bock and Eric Carlson. Doors open at 5 p.m. A pre-show, featuring the Young Strings and the Steel Dove Band, begins at 5:30 p.m. The main concert starts at 7 p.m. Food and beverages will be available for purchase. Walking and picking. The 14th Annual MS Orchard Walk and Fundraiser is Saturday morning at Apple Holler Farm, 5006 S. Sylvania Ave., Yorkville. Admission is $25 per person and includes an apple pancake breakfast, a morning walk through the orchard to pick a bag of Paula Red apples and an entry in the raffle prize drawing. The breakfast runs from 7 to 11 a.m. The orchard walk gets under way at 9 a.m. Proceeds go the National Multiple Sclerosis Society-Wisconsin Chapter. Choose wings or wheels. The Burlington Airport Fly-In/Drive-In runs from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday at the airport, 703 Airport Road, Burlington. Burlington High School B-Jazzled group will serve a pancake breakfast from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. The Burlington Fire Department takes over from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. serving up brats, hot dogs and burgers. There will be also be biplane rides (additional fee) all day by Gypsy Air Tours. Free admission and parking.
Something wild. The Racine Zoo, 2131 N. Main St., offers Whiskers & Whiskey from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday. The event features fine whiskeys paired with hors d’oeuvres and a five-course gourmet dinner.
