Quarry Lake Park will close for approximately one week to allow work to improve the water clarity of the lake.
The park will be closed, weather permitting, from September 26 through October 4. A contractor will be on site to perform work that includes applying a safe treatment to eradicate algae growth, said Julie Anderson, Racine County Public Works and Development Services Director.
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources will oversee the work and has issued permits to apply the treatment. The treatment is expected to cover the entire seventeen acres of Quarry Lake at a cost of about $24,000. This money was budgeted by the County as a 2018 expense; it was also approved by the Racine County Public Works, Parks & Facilities Committee.
Dog park will remain open
The Karen A. Nelson Dog Park at Quarry Lake Park will remain open during this project.
Quarry Lake was also closed to the public for a few weeks earlier in the year while its beach was restored.
About 3,000 tons — or 125 truckloads — of fresh sand was dumped at the beach during that work, replacing sediment and sludge from decaying leaves and vegetation, according to Anderson.
