A 43-year-old inmate at the Racine County Jail was charged Monday with two felony counts after he allegedly beat another inmate.

Tramayne D. Massie was charged in Racine County Circuit Court with felony counts of substantial battery and battery by prisoners, which carry a total fine of $20,000 and nine years, six months in prison.

Massie also is charged with a misdemeanor count of disorderly conduct, which carries a fine of $1,000 and 90 days in county jail.

According to the criminal complaint: An officer working at the jail investigated a fight between the defendant and another inmate that occurred in the day room Oct. 25.

The video showed Massie approaching the victim, who was walking away from a table. Both can be seen exchanging words, and as the victim walked away, he was struck multiple times in the head by the defendant with a closed fist. The victim punched Massie three times, and then the video showed the defendant push the victim, get on top of him and repeatedly punch him.

Court records indicate the victim required multiple stitches inside and outside of his mouth. He also suffered a swollen lip, bruising to his face and swelling to the side of his head. The victim also required a CT scan, which came back negative.

Massie, who made his initial court appearance Monday, is due to return to court Nov. 7 for an 8:30 a.m. preliminary hearing.
