RACINE — The Racine Zoo announced on Oct. 23, the arrival of the zoo’s newest resident, Changbai.

Changbai is a 16-year-old female Amur tiger and is taking the former home of Naka, the Amur tiger, who passed away earlier this year.

According to the zoo, her name roughly translates to “forever white mountains” and was named for the Changbai mountains, located in Eastern China.

From Connecticut to Racine

Changbai is a well-traveled tiger. According to Beardsley Zoo in Connecticut, she was born on May 24, 2007, at the Philadelphia Zoo.

She then resided at Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo for two years before being transferred to Columbus as part of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ (AZA) Species Survival Plan. She then transferred back to Beardsley Zoo, where she successfully gave birth to three cubs.

Now, she has been donated to the Racine Zoo by the Beardsley Zoo to “live out her golden years.”

Visiting Changbai

The Racine Zoo shares that their newest resident arrives just in time to help officially welcome in the fall colors and add her own special shade of orange to those of the pumpkins and changing leaves.

The zoo welcomes Changbai as the newest member of the Zoo family and encourages people to visit.

“But not too loudly, as she gets accustomed to her new surroundings,” explained the zoo.
