A Good Samaritan who offered a man walking down the side of the road a ride last month quickly became the victim of a robbery. As a result, a 34-year-old Pleasant Prairie man faces a felony criminal charge that could lead to a 15-year prison term and a $50,000 fine.

Casey Nelson remains in custody in the Racine County Jail on a $5,000 cash bond. In addition to the felony, Nelson also is charged with misdemeanor bail jumping.

The criminal complaint: Man robbed at knifepoint

An officer spoke by telephone with a man, who stated he had picked up Nelson, who he knew previously, as the defendant walked on the side of a road.

As the man drove, Nelson told him to pull over in the 400 block of Luedtke Avenue, where armed with a knife, he demanded everything from the victim’s pockets. The victim stated he gave about $120 to Nelson, who then demanded his phone and exited the vehicle.

The victim then sped away, and Nelson allegedly threw a brick at the vehicle. The victim was able to positively identify Nelson through a booking photograph.

Nelson also faces five criminal charges that stem from his arrest on Dec. 26, 2023.

According to that criminal complaint:

An officer with the Sturtevant Police Department responded to the 9500 block of Grayce Drive for a report that Nelson was being aggressive and “tearing the house apart.”

Police spoke with a female, who stated that Nelson had left before they arrived. Nelson had been staying at the residence, and when he was told he had to leave, he allegedly became upset and punched a stack of collectible figures, valued up to $50 each.

Criminal court records show that Nelson was free on bond last July 24. In that case, he’s charged with misdemeanor counts of criminal damage to property and using a computer message to threaten injury or harm.

As part of that bond, Nelson was ordered not to commit any further crimes and also not to have contact with the female at the residence.

Nelson was back in Racine County Circuit Court on March 28, for a 9 a.m. preliminary hearing where he pleaded not guilty. He will be back in court on June 7 for an 8:30 a.m. status conference.
