MOUNT PLEASANT — President Joe Biden will be in Racine on Wednesday, May 8, to help announce the expansion of Microsoft‘s planned server farm in Mount Pleasant.

Microsoft President Brad Smith was in the area last week and met with individuals from the private and public sectors, including educators and local officials, a story from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel (J/S) reads.

Microsoft land purchase paves the way for expansion

The company completed its purchase of just over 1,000 acres in December 2023 in Mount Pleasant. Microsoft now owns a total of 1,345 acres in Mount Pleasant for a project valued at about $1.4 billion.

This is the same land where Foxconn promised 13,000 jobs and was touted by former President Donald Trump as the “8th Wonder of the World.” The reality is nowhere near as robust as promised.

To date, Foxconn has built a handful of buildings, including its spherical data center, and there are about 1,000 people who work there manufacturing computer data servers and power converters for solar panels, the J/S story continues.

Microsoft expected to significantly increase jobs

The number of jobs Microsoft expects to create is expected to significantly increase along with its billions-dollar expansion, the J/S story continues.

While server farms traditionally don’t require large numbers of employees to run them, Biden and Microsoft officials are expected to announce billions more in investment from the company as well as a greater number of jobs.

Where and when Biden and Microsoft will make their announcement hasn’t yet been announced.

Racine County Eye will update this story as details become available.

  1. The information in this story isn’t accurate. The land that was purchased was from Mount Pleasant and not Foxconn. Foxconn still has their land in Phase 1, and the Microsoft purchased was in Phase 2. This story was poorly written, referenced J/S (Milwaukee Journal Times??), and didn’t look into the facts. At first I thought this was written by a middle school student, just to find out she has “over 30 years” of journalism experience.
